canadian dj and producer jesse somfay has been releasing music on various labels, including traum and archipel (they will be releasing his forthcoming album next year) since 2004. the 22 year old was turned on to electronic music through online radio shows in the mid nineties. this lead him, as it has so many others, down the path to dj-ing.

after a couple of years of playing hard techno jesse began to reach back to the music his father had introduced him to as a child: jean michael jarre, tangerine dream, vangelis. this softer style is on full display in this weeks epic mix. this is part one of a five part series (the rest of which can be enjoyed here). we recommnend you turn off on the phone, make a couple of tea and sit down luxuriate in jesse's world for two hours.

Some really great tracks on this, but the mixing was so off. I realise it wouldn't suit straight beat matching, but it's really incongruous at times.

i agree i like some of the tracks but the mixing was pretty lame if you ask me , wasn't even in key really and the same back to back boards of canada to aphex twin in the beginning of the mix and the end wasn't very ingenious for an experimental set, But oh well .....

All those who're critiquing the negligent 'mixing', it might help to know that Somfay notes on the Hexahedral site where this selection is taken from: "This is not intended to sound mixed in any way as it is not a DJ mix. It is merely a selection of music strung together, so the focus is purely on the music itself and not the technicalities of mixing."

That's fair enough, but it's on a mix site, it's called a mix, and, whilst I'm really happy with Jesse's choices, most people will take this mix as a reflection on his abilities. Maybe that's Allez-Allez' fault for labelling it as such? Myself, I wouldn't be happy to put this out there because of how jarring the segue is between just about every track...

it would have been better if some of the tracks had finished before mixing in the next one, with the nature of the music it is too chaotic at the transition stage and spoils the overall ambiance... jesse is a good producer however and the choice of music here is right on the button x
